Hello Jonny, I do recall looking up in disbelief after the accident and seeing the black piaggio piled on top of my bike, so many commiserations to you as well.

I'm still off work today, and don't think I'll be back to A1 for some weeks yet, but it is one of the benefits of the human body that I can hope to heal perhaps even without any scars at all in that time just by looking after myself a bit. Those police figures sound remarkably high, I'd hope your insurer would cover them, not sure about you but I am informed that having been run over by an essentially uninsured driver I should essentially wind up claiming from the central scheme for uninsured drivers.

Like you I'm off on holiday pretty soon, so I hope I can get some new glasses sorted before all that happens. There's never a good time for these things to happen, but it is bloody irritating timing all the same, apart from the Tour de France being on telly. Let's hope they catch whoever did this to both of us, from stealing, to driving dangerously to running me over and running away they've been cowards all the way along.

I think it was my scooter that was stolen and involved in your incident, was it a black piaggio or were you too concussed to notice?

I am glad you are not too damaged unlike my bike which has been removed to Perivale police pound where it is undergoing forensics and the people there informed me with a certain amount of relish that it would be scrapped within 7 days unless I paid a £150 release fee + a £10 daily residence charge. Not easy as I am going on holiday friday and they will not tell me when the forensics are finished. helpful. not.

I hope you recover quickly.

@Tom Jenny Jones on Newsnight seemed certainly to have the inclination, her power stops at being on the Met advisory board but she was being very strong in her criticism.

In more depressing news, this story was offered to the BBC for their 6 o'clock news but they turned it down for being too London centric.:

When the Guardian offered this astonishing footage to the BBC News at 6, apparently the response was "No thanks, we're not covering this, we see it as just a London story." Great news sense down there at TV Centre.

It ran as the third item on the 10 O'Clock news but in a short piece that whilst it noted that there were awkward questions utterly failed to ask them.

@SpudTater: 'devolved into'?

The horrible bit is that there's nobody with the power to do anything about this with the inclination to do so. Labour's home secretaries have been the most authoritarian nutjobs available. There's no way the Tories will do anything that might compromise their Law and Order credentials (fine talk about liberty notwithstanding). The media have had every opportunity to get serious about overpolicing in general for years, and have consistently passed it up (despite the effect it has on, eg photography, which you might think they'd give a toss about). The Lords of Appeal in Ordinary (are they the Supreme Court now?) ruled in favour of the police in the Oxford Circus May Day kettling case.

I think we're still due an ECHR verdict on the Oxford Circus case, BICBW. A fine thread to hang your hopes on, though.

I am stunned. I expected some incompetence but the man was so clearly not a threat and yet still they lashed out. Inexcusable.

I've decided to write to my London Assembly representatives but I can't decide if it's better to write to the lot of them and give my e-mail address to the BNP or just to contact one of a friendly colour.
